Every Child Belongs: 5 Practical Strategies

Classrooms today are rich in diversity—of culture, identity, experience, and perspective.

But creating a truly inclusive classroom goes beyond celebrating difference. It requires intentional choices, thoughtful conversations, and reflective practice.

The goal is simple, but powerful:
to create a space where every child feels they belong, and where difference is understood, respected, and explored.

Based on our EPV course Every Child Belongs: Supporting the Diverse Classroom, here are key strategies to help you build a more inclusive, thoughtful, and empowering classroom environment.

📚 1. Diversify Your Classroom Materials

Make representation meaningful—not tokenistic.

🔹 Strategies:

  • Audit your classroom library
Check: Who is represented? Who is missing? Aim for diversity in culture, family structure, ability, language, and identity.
  • Use “mirrors and windows”
Ensure children see themselves (mirrors) and learn about others (windows).
  • Integrate across subjects
Don’t limit diversity to story time—include it in history, geography, SPHE, and even maths problems.
  • Pre-teach context when needed
Help pupils understand unfamiliar cultural references to avoid confusion or misinterpretation.

đź—Ł 2. Facilitate Respectful Discussion

Give children the tools to talk about difference safely.

🔹 Strategies:

  • Use structured talk routines
Try: Think–Pair–Share, Turn and Talk, or Circle Time.
  • Create discussion agreements
Co-create rules like: “We listen fully,” “We don’t interrupt,” “We can disagree respectfully.”
  • Model language explicitly
    Provide sentence starters:
    • “I think… because…”
    • “I see it differently because…”
    • “Can you explain more?”
  • Normalise curiosity
Teach children that it’s okay to ask questions—but how we ask matters.

🧠 3. Build Critical Literacy

Help children think, question, and notice.

🔹 Strategies:

  • Ask deeper questions during reading
    • “Whose story is this?”
    • “Is anyone missing?”
    • “How else could this be told?”
  • Spot stereotypes together
Gently explore: “Do we always see girls/boys like this?”
  • Compare perspectives
Use two texts or viewpoints to show how stories can differ.
  • Encourage “why thinking”
Move beyond recall—ask children to explain and justify ideas.
  • Use visual texts
Images, ads, and illustrations are great entry points for discussing representation.

đź’› 4. Strengthen Belonging & Wellbeing

Create a classroom where every child feels safe and valued.

🔹 Strategies:

  • Daily connection moments
Greet each child by name, use check-ins, or morning circles.
  • Celebrate identity safely
Invite sharing (e.g. traditions, interests) but never put children on the spot.
  • Use inclusive displays
Show diverse families, languages, and experiences as “normal.”
  • Respond to exclusion immediately
Address comments like “you can’t play” or stereotypes calmly and clearly.
  • Build peer connection
Use cooperative learning and mixed group work to strengthen relationships.

🔍 5. Embed SSE & Reflective Practice

Make inclusion sustainable—not a one-off.

🔹 Strategies:

  • Use simple reflection prompts
    • Who is participating most?
    • Who is quieter or disengaged?
    • What might support them?
  • Set one small focus area
Example: “Improve representation in reading materials this term.”
  • Gather pupil voice
Ask: “Do you feel included in this class?” (use age-appropriate methods)
  • Track small changes
Note what works—this builds confidence and consistency.
  • Review regularly
Revisit your goals each term using the SSE cycle.

🌟 Bringing It All Together

You don’t need to change everything at once.

Start with one or two strategies. Build gradually. Reflect often.

Because inclusion isn’t about perfection—it’s about intentional, consistent practice.

And when this happens, something powerful shifts:

âś” Children feel seen
âś” Conversations deepen
âś” Thinking expands
âś” Classrooms become communities
