Creating an inclusive classroom is all about making sure every student feels supported, engaged, and confident in their learning. Luckily, technology can make this so much easier! Whether you’re a tech whiz or just starting out, here are five simple (but super effective) ways to use digital tools to make learning more accessible for everyone.
1. Use Assistive Tech to Break Down Barriers
Not every student learns the same way, and that’s totally okay! Assistive technology can make a huge difference—speech-to-text tools (like Google Docs Voice Typing) help students who struggle with writing, while text-to-speech readers (like Read&Write) can support those who find reading challenging. Don’t forget about built-in accessibility features on devices, like screen magnifiers and auto-captioning—small changes that can have a big impact!
2. Get Students Collaborating with Digital Tools
Platforms like Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and Seesaw let students work together in real time, whether they prefer typing, voice recordings, or even video responses. Giving students different ways to express their thoughts ensures everyone can participate in a way that feels comfortable for them.
3. Personalise Learning with Interactive Apps
No two students learn at the same pace, so why should their lessons be one-size-fits-all? Apps like Kahoot!, Quizizz, and ActivInspire make it easy to create fun, interactive quizzes and lessons that adapt to each student’s needs. Plus, they provide instant feedback, so students (and teachers!) know where they stand and what to focus on next.
4. Make Learning More Visual and Fun
A lot of students, especially those with learning difficulties, find visual aids super helpful. Tools like Canva for Education let you create eye-catching presentations, infographics, and mind maps that simplify complex ideas.
5. Mix It Up with Multimedia
Some students love reading, others prefer watching videos, and some learn best by doing. A mix of videos, podcasts, and interactive whiteboard lessons (like those made with ActivInspire) helps cater to different learning styles.
Technology isn’t just about making lessons more fun (though that’s definitely a plus!)—it’s a powerful tool for making sure every student gets the support they need. Whether it’s through assistive tech, collaboration tools, or interactive lessons, small tech tweaks can make a big difference in how students experience learning.
